Solar Panel Maintenance UK: Cleaning, Monitoring, Faults & Inverter Issues
Solar PV is low-maintenance — but not zero-maintenance. Here's what to watch for and when to act.
Routine Maintenance
Cleaning
- • UK rainfall typically keeps panels reasonably clean
- • Annual clean recommended if near trees, birds, or main roads
- • Use soft brush and plain water — no chemicals or pressure washers
- • Professional cleaning costs £50–£150 depending on system size
- • Dirty panels can lose 5–10% output
Monitoring
- • Check your monitoring app weekly — takes 30 seconds
- • Look for sudden drops in generation (could indicate fault)
- • Compare month-on-month with previous years
- • Per-panel monitoring (microinverters/optimisers) spots individual issues
- • Set up alerts if your system supports them
Common Faults & What to Do
Inverter Error / Red Light
Cause: Grid voltage issue, internal fault, or overheating
Action: Check the error code in your manual or app. Try restarting (isolate and reconnect). If persistent, contact installer.
Sudden Drop in Output
Cause: Tripped isolator switch, shading change, panel fault, or wiring issue
Action: Check all isolator switches are on. Check monitoring for individual panel issues. Contact installer if no obvious cause.
Zero Generation
Cause: Tripped circuit breaker, inverter failure, or grid outage
Action: Check consumer unit for tripped MCB. Check inverter display. If grid is up and breakers are on, call installer.
Bird Nesting / Pigeon Problems
Cause: Pigeons nesting under panels — droppings reduce output and block ventilation
Action: Install bird mesh/guards (£300–£600). Prevents nesting and keeps panels cleaner. Best done during installation.
Inverter Lifespan & Replacement
String Inverters
Typical lifespan: 10–15 years. Budget £800–£1,500 for replacement. Extended warranties (to 20 years) available at install for £200–£400 — often worth it.
Microinverters
Typical lifespan: 20–25 years. Warranties usually match panel life. Individual failure doesn't affect other panels — less disruptive but costlier per-unit to replace.
Annual Maintenance Checklist
- Visual inspection: check for cracked panels, loose cables, or debris
- Clean panels if soiled (or arrange professional clean)
- Check inverter display — no error codes, green light on
- Review monitoring data — compare with same month last year
- Check all isolator switches are accessible and labelled
- Inspect roof fixings and cable clips for weather damage
- Check bird mesh is intact (if fitted)
- Test RCD/MCB trips in your consumer unit
