MCS Certification for Solar: Why It Matters + How to Check Your Installer

MCS certification is the industry quality mark for small-scale renewable energy installations in the UK. Here's why it's non-negotiable.

    Why MCS Certification Matters

    Required for SEG Payments

You can only earn from the Smart Export Guarantee if your system was installed by an MCS-certified installer.

    Quality Assurance

MCS sets standards for design, installation, and commissioning — covering equipment, workmanship, and safety.

    Consumer Protection

MCS-certified installers must belong to a consumer code (e.g., RECC or HIES), giving you dispute resolution and deposit protection.

    How to Check Your Installer

Step 1: Search the MCS Database

Visit the official MCS Installer Database at mcscertified.com. Enter your postcode to find certified installers in your area.

    Search MCS Database

    Step 2: Verify the Certificate

Every MCS-certified installer has a unique certificate number. Ask for this before paying any deposit. The certificate should cover solar PV specifically — MCS covers multiple technologies.

    Step 3: Check Consumer Code

Confirm membership of an approved consumer code: RECC (Renewable Energy Consumer Code) or HIES (Home Insulation & Energy Systems). This provides dispute resolution and insurance-backed guarantees.

    Step 4: After Installation

Your installer should provide an MCS certificate for the completed installation. This is your proof for SEG applications, building regulations sign-off, and any future property sale.

    Red Flags to Watch For

    • Not listed on the MCS Installer Database
    • No mention of consumer protection scheme membership
    • Pressure to sign quickly without a written specification
    • Refuses to provide MCS certificate number before deposit
    • Won't confirm DNO notification responsibility
    • Quotes without a site survey
