Best Solar Panels for UK Homes (2026)

What to look for — not just brands. A spec-based buying guide that helps you compare any panel on the market.

    6 Specs That Actually Matter

Brand names are less important than specifications. Here's what to compare when evaluating any solar panel:

    Efficiency (%)

How much sunlight a panel converts to electricity. Residential panels range from 18–23%. Higher efficiency = more power per m² of roof.

Look for: 20%+ for standard installs. 22%+ if roof space is limited.

    Temperature Coefficient

How much output drops as panels heat up. UK summers can push panel temps above 25°C test conditions.

Look for: Better than -0.35%/°C. Premium panels achieve -0.26%/°C.

    Degradation Rate

Annual output loss over time. Lower is better — panels generate for 25–30+ years.

Look for: Less than 0.5%/year. Best panels guarantee 87%+ at year 25.

    Product Warranty

Covers manufacturing defects. Separate from the performance warranty.

Look for: Minimum 15 years. Premium panels offer 25 years.

    Performance Warranty

Guarantees minimum output over time (e.g. 84–89% at year 25).

Look for: 87%+ at 25 years. Check the degradation curve, not just the endpoint.

    Wattage

Power output per panel. Higher wattage = fewer panels for the same system size.

Look for: 400–420W is standard residential in 2026. 430W+ is premium.

    Panel Technologies Compared

The technology inside the panel matters more than the brand name on the frame.

    Monocrystalline (PERC)

    19–21% efficiency

The workhorse of UK residential solar. Proven, widely available, best value for money. Made from single-crystal silicon.

Best for: Most UK homes — reliable and cost-effective.

    TOPCon (N-type)

    21–23% efficiency

Next-generation technology with lower degradation and better low-light performance. Rapidly replacing PERC as the new standard.

Best for: Homes wanting the best current technology at reasonable cost.

    Heterojunction (HJT)

    22–24% efficiency

Premium technology with the best temperature coefficient and lowest degradation. Highest efficiency but also highest price.

Best for: Limited roof space or maximum long-term performance.

    Certifications to Check

    MCS Certification

Required for SEG eligibility. The installer must be MCS-certified, and the panels must be on the MCS product list. Non-MCS installs won't qualify for export payments.

    IEC Standards

Look for IEC 61215 (design qualification) and IEC 61730 (safety). These are international standards that all quality panels meet. Also check for salt mist and ammonia resistance if you're coastal.
